How AI Can Help You Save Money Every Month
Jun 24 2026
Saving money can be a challenge, especially when the cost of food, housing and other expenses continues to rise faster than wages are going up.
There are several ways AI can help you find ways to save, track spending and be more efficient with the ways you spend. For example, I recently used AI to help me optimize my home's energy consumption just as the summer heat has spiked my electric bills. I have also used AI to find online promo codes for purchases or local sales and the best hotel rates for travel.
I’ve been using both Claude and ChatGPT, and sometimes I use both to compare results. Both have been effective tools help get my finances in better order and to find ways to save money every month. I also have found that AI’s conversational nature has gamified my efforts to find ways to save money, making it even more motivational.
A Note on Using AI Safely
AI isn't perfect. As you share information about your expenses, always make sure to exclude personally identifiable information and information like passwords, credit card or bank account numbers, Social Security Number, driver’s license number, or any other information you wouldn’t share with strangers. Doing so could put your personal information at risk of a data breech and AI doesn’t need those details to help you save money.
If you're inclined to share bank statments, utility bills, credit card statements, etc., make sure you black out your account number and personal information. You only need to include your deposits, purchases, and withdrawals.
Here are some of the ways I've used AI to save money:
Use AI to Help You Save Money on Groceries
Ask AI to help you build a weekly menu and shopping list. By doing so you can reduce food waste and use more of what you have in your refrigerator and pantry every week, and, thus, reducing your food bills. Enter a list of ingredients you have in your house and let AI help you plan your family’s meals for the week. You can even take a picture of your refrigerator and pantry and ChatGPT can use that photo to determine what you already have and use that information to build a shopping list for you.
Upload your Grocery List for Ways to Save
AI has access to store circulars that are online. If you upload your grocery list, it can find the stores with the cheapest prices. Keep in mind that prices may vary locally, so it’s not 100% accurate but it’s a great starting point.
It can also let you know if it’s worthwhile to visit different stores for savings and, if so, it can help you group your list into different stops.
AI can also analyze where you’ll save money buying in bulk. The unit price is not always cheaper on large packages; AI can do this math for you and show you where you can save money.
By analyzing your grocery list, AI can also:
- Help spot foods you don’t need / duplicates (like multiple kinds of snacks)
- Suggest lower-cost alternatives (like store brands)
- Recommend multiple ways to use the same ingredients to minimize food waste
Ask AI to Help You Lower Your Utility Bills
I live on Long Island and have been been struggling with high electric bills. So, I asked ChatGPT to analyze the best times and temperatures to run my wall air conditioning units, and it shared a schedule that would minimize energy use during peak times.
It also listed energy-hungry appliances that I should only run during off-peak times. For instance, by using our clothes dryer only before 3 PM or after 7 PM, we could save up to $25 per month.
Finally, it suggested I compare my options for different plans through the electric company website. By switching to a “super off-peak” plan and continuing to run my dishwasher and clothes dryer late at night, I can save another $137 per year.
Let AI Review Your Credit Card Rewards and Benefits
I don’t consider myself a “points-hacking” champion, but I have a few travel and restaurant rewards credit cards I use regularly. I made a list of my cards and asked ChatGPT to read the fine print on the websites to see if I’m missing any perks.
It turns out I have price protection of up to $250 per claim, for four claims per year. If I’m planning any major electronics or appliance purchases, this gives me peace-of-mind that I can always get the best price. I also have 90-day theft and damage protection.
It also suggested the types of stores where I should use each card to maximize my rewards based on points values and bonus points.
Save Money on Travel
With access to the major travel platforms, AI can hunt for the best deals on flights, hotels and rental cars. If you have flexible travel dates, it can tell you the cheapest days for your trip.
For example, I recently used ChatGPT to help me find a low-cost hotel in Tampa for specific dates, and the cheapest cities with good food and fun things to do along I-95 as I made my way down to Florida.
Find Forgotten Subscriptions Using AI
You can connect ChatGPT to your Gmail account and ask it to look for recurring subscriptions and other charges over the past year. Ask it to: “Look for receipts, renewals, free-trial conversions, annual memberships and recurring charges. Include services billed through Apple, Google, PayPal and Amazon when identifiable.”
Once it has a list, ask it to make recommendations regarding which subscriptions you should cancel to save money.
Ask AI to Analyze Your Spending for a Month and Find Ways to Cut Back
You can upload your spending history and ask AI to find ways you are wasting money and opportunities to save. This may take a bit of time, especially if you’re like me and use multiple credit cards and bank accounts to manage your money.
Don’t give ChatGPT or Claude access to your bank accounts. Export data from your account statements into CSV, Excel or PDF files and delete account information.
Then, ask AI to identify:
Recurring subscriptionsInterest charges and late feesRepeated discretionary purchases that can easily be cutGrocery purchases vs. dining out, which could show an easy way to save money
Finally, ask the AI platform to identify five easy ways you can reduce spending, and how much you could save without changing your lifestyle.
Ask AI to Help You Write a Budget
Once the generative AI platform has all your spending data, it can also help you create a budget. For this step, you’ll need to enter all your income. It’s best to enter three months of income and spending data, especially if you have variable income. That will give the AI a better idea of your spending patterns and income over time.
Let AI know your priorities and goals, non-negotiable spending categories and the size of your household. It can help you create a balanced budget that includes moderate savings or a stricter budget that can help you pay down debt faster or boost your retirement savings.
Check in weekly within the first month of using your new budget to see if you’re staying on track with your financial goals.
Conclusion
Like a good friend who happens to be a whiz at searching the Internet, AI can open your eyes to new ways to save money and help you spot areas where you’re wasting money.
It can be your cheerleader when it comes to sticking to your budget, help you find the best high-yield savings accounts, and offer shopping tips. It all comes down to using the right prompts.
Aren’t sure what to ask AI to help you save money? Start by asking AI for ideas. It can suggest the best prompts for you based on your financial goals. And once you get started, make sure to stick to the plan and keep updating AI with new expenses and financial challenges so that you can continue to refine and improve your budget and save money wherever you can.
